history

Since Paul died in 1997 many things have changed in the world of the GAA.  The influence of this minor player has been felt deeply at all levels within the sport.  The Tyrone team which he played with has gone on to All-Ireland glory at Minor, U-21 and Senior levels, with Paul's memory evoked by Peter Canavan in accepting Sam Maguire in 2003.  Since 2000 the U-16 Champions from each county in Ulster have competed for the Paul McGirr Trophy.  This has now become an official competition backed by the Ulster Council

On the 10th Anniversary of his death, the young people of Dromore set up a group called The Spirit of Paul McGirr.  Since then, the group has been actively raising funds and recruiting volunteers to work in St Teresa's Parish, Lusaka, Zambia.  The SMA Missionary Priests and Friends of Africa are already well established in Zambia and have founded many worthwhile and productive projects where the need is most urgent.  Together with the SMA, the Spirit of Paul McGirr is helping to implement initiatives such as training the young generation in the skills they need to be self-sustaining, such as bricklaying, sewing, carpentry, adult literacy and information technology.

Our aim is to serve the needs of the people of Lusaka, Zambia and offer them some of the resources necessary to improve their quality of life and that of their families and community.  Our underlying motivation and the steadfast commitment we apply in our efforts is ultimately “The Spirit Of Paul McGirr”.
